The Tribunal may make such order as to costs as it thinks fit. It can order payment of costs or a contribution towards costs of such amount as the Tribunal may consider reasonable, which can include the costs of the Law Society's Investigation Accountant. For example, the Tribunal may make an order for the payment of a fixed amount of costs following its own summary assessment, or it may order detailed assessment of costs by a Costs Judge. In some cases it may order costs not to be enforced without leave of the Tribunal. Each case is different and will be decided on its own facts.
Please refer to the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal Guidance Note on Sanctions (10th Edition) for details of the Tribunal's powers in respect of fines and costs. This Guidance Note applies to cases heard from 25 November 2019.
For previous editions of the Guidance Note on Sanctions, please contact the SDT administrative office by telephone to 0207 329 4808 or by email to Enquiries@solicitorsdt.com.
The Tribunal has no power to award compensation.
